這樣的概念讓我想起 Palm Foleo
不同的是流年不利的 Palm 保不住 Foleo , 而 Air 則有著蘋果品牌的光環加持

Air 的理念中我覺得最關鍵的一環 - 無線化
但也讓我對 Air 的定位感到混淆
* Subnote (次筆電)?
通常次筆電有完整的 I/O 介面應付商務需求
Air 的重量落在次筆電的級距裡, 但 Air 捨棄了大部分的 I/O 介面及採用特殊規格 (Micro-DVI)
* Mobile Terminal (行動終端)?
通常行動終端具備廣域無線網路規格達成 Always connected 的能力
Air 規格的精簡化符合行動終端的設計, 但 Air 缺乏 HSPA, CDMA2000, 或是 WiMAX 的無線網路規格
那麼, 蘋果究竟將 Air 定位在哪一端?
在 MacWorld keynote 上 Steve Jobs 將 Air 與 VAIO TZ 對比, 那麼就是欲定位為 Subnote
然而從設計理念 (Born free) 來看, 我看到的是一台行動終端
在缺乏最關鍵的廣域無線網路能力下, 或許是初代 Air 不得不傾向 Subnote 定位的原因

厚度是重點?
對於行動族群
重量才是
為了極端縮減機身厚度, 縮減電池容量與 I/O 介面
那麼
Air 的輕薄化究竟是為了打造一台 Thin client, 或是為了達成 "世界第一薄" 的稱號?

Air 似乎是理所當然的搭載了 Leopard
這就是蘋果對於 Air 追求自由 (Free) 的答案?
為了運轉一個全功能的龐大作業系統
就必須搭配強大的運算能力
在現有的技術水準下
"運算能力" 與 "續航力" 像是天秤的兩端
越加碼運算能力, 越損失續航力
Air 傾斜往運算能力, 犧牲了續航力
等於是蘋果親手為 Air 的自由上了枷鎖
為了搭載 Leopard
Air 的目標族群是?
我原以為是以網路應用 (Web applications), 文書處理等輕應用為主的族群
Air 對於運算能力的執著, 是否是追尋著錯的方向?
如果將 Leopard 萃取出一個著重效率的精簡特製版本
降低運算能力的需求, 提升續航力
這樣的作業系統會不會更適合 Air?
- 定位 -
Steve Jobs 將 Air 與 VAIO TZ (日系 Subnote) 對比並不是一個明智的舉動
Air 與 日系 Subnote 一樣追求輕量薄型化
但 Air 著重運算效能甚於續航力, 為了極致的薄型化可以做出更大的妥協
而日系 Subnote 堅持 "輕量" "長續航力" "堅固" 俱在
Air 在捨棄了這一切後卻在行動族群重視的重量與續航力落後日系 Subnote
可以說
Air 的理念 (Born free) 在日系 Subnote 上實踐的更為徹底
我想
Air 與同樣執著於運算效能的 Thinkpad X 相較才能顯出其獨到處

網路的時代, 行動終端有兩個重要發展方向:
I. 運算與儲存分離: 軟硬體精簡化, 網路應用 (Web applications) 為主流, 資料存放於外部伺服器
II. Always connected: 永遠保持網路連線
Air 可以
* 硬體 - 搭載完整無線網路規格 - 802.11 a/b/g/n, Bluetooth, WUSB, 廣域無線廣路 (HSPA or WiMAX)
換上超低電壓版 CPU, 增加電池容量延長續航力 (以 10 小時為目標)
將 SSD 列為標準配備 (省電/耐震/高效能/靜音)
* 軟體 - 搭載 Leopard 精簡特製版
試著將 Air 打造成一個具有 Always online 能力的行動終端 (Mobile terminal)
真正擁有與生俱來的自由 (Born free)
